Eco Simulation Changes

January 30th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

This week we are starting to add some changes that we think will in the end make the eco simulation better and easier to understand. We are doing a lot of construction work in the background so we will have a strong foundation on which we can start building on things like eco and social.

New Giant Bins Released - Trash and Toxic!

Here we go! Now you can stuff all your trash and toxic into one huge bin, handy when you’re recycling or going to work to get rid of that toxic. You can find these in the Featured store and under Miscellaneous!

Polluted Lots

It’s getting easier and easier to see you’re on a polluted lot!

If you live on a Deep Water or Hillside property, you will be able to see if your lot is in need of cleaning or not… The deep water ones are infested with black jellyfish and we have no idea what died on the Hillside. Better get your brooms and rubber gloves out if you want that to change back the way it was!

Or you can even…

Let the trees do the work for you!

If you grow some apple trees, they will help you clean the pollution on your lot and when they die, you can recycle them and gain lower cfp wood. Apple trees now remove more cfp than before. So it’s a good thing to have an apple tree or two on your lot, and the rare apple trees are even better!

We can grow three types of rare apples. The Granny Smith green ones are easiest to get, then there’s the Ozark Mountain Blue, and the Exotic Pacific Purple.

Resources sold in full bins

Now you can purchase full bins of resources from TirNua if you run out! The prices should not interfere with player stores and recycling in the game.

Note: You can see the cfp of the resource bins if you click on the resource and have a look in the upper right corner. For TirNua bought bins you can see the cfp of the bin itself and the cfp of the resources inside it, and also how many units are in it.

The huge component bins (gold, silver, bronze) are still sold empty.

CFP of resources and default resource bins

CFP is the sum of bad (good if negative) enviromental impacts required to get the good or service to it’s current state. In real life carbon footprint includes the manufacturing costs, the transportation costs (raw materials and final product), raw material acquision costs, etc. In TirNua, it means roughly the same except we broaden the definition to “bad for the environment” v. “good for the environment”.

When things are manufactured, transported and so on, this adds to the footprint they have had on the world. For example metal is very hard to get at a low cost to the environment. Mining, refining and transporting it will have a negative effect on the environment and it leads to a high cfp for the resource. Plastic and many other resources are also bad for the environment.

In the past the cfp of the recycled resources was pretty much the same no matter what you recycled. When an item was recycled, the cfp of the resources you got could be much lower or much higher than the object was.
We changed this so it’s now much more accurate. When you recycle resources, the cfp of the item you recycle will now propagate down to the resources themselves. No additional cfp will be created or removed in the recycling process. If a bin is 40 cfp, and recycles into 2 resources, the resources will each be 20 cfp. And if you recycle an object that is 100 cfp and it contains 2 resources, the resources will each be 50 cfp, and so on. The cfp will travel down the chain.

So to find low cfp resources, you should look for (or create) a very low cfp item and recycle it.

The old resources you owned before today’s update, will not change their cfp.
New resources that you get from this update and on, will use the new system.

Remember, to find low cfp resources, find an item that has had a good impact on the environment during its lifetime, or that has been created using low materials/energy.

The baby bottles and cat food/litter bags are grandfathered in at a lower cfp.

Other changes to balancing CFP

  • supergrow and fertilizer now have a higher cfp cost
  • cleaning birds will remove more cfp than before (hotfixed during last week)
  • cfp of a map hexagon can now go negative when growing plants

Other fixes and changes

  • if you get rid of toxic while working, you will see it removed when you finish
  • EMP values are now needed for some more interactions such as starting a boiler
  • some tooltips added to pie menus where they are greyed out, to make things clearer
  • sitting in a chair and running a recycle machine will re-attempt if they fail
  • GP total shown at top of the shopping cart
  • online friends will be sorted first in the friends list

Let us know what you think! There will be more things happening during the week as usual, so keep an eye out! :)

Cheers,

The Sunken Shrine

January 25th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

An ancient shrine has been discovered by the shoreline in TirNua!

This amazing find was made by an offshore oil drilling team. The excavators delved too deep to satisfy their greed, and they unearthed this ancient shrine, hidden in the mud for thousands of years.

While the team was busy positioning their pipes and starting drilling, the ground suddenly started rumbling, the sand under their feet quickly disappeared. Huge boulders broke loose and fell into the ocean below. To the drillers’ surprise they all survived and when they looked up, they couldn’t believe their eyes. Out of the depths the remnants of an ancient civilization had been uncovered!

Archaeologists were quickly summoned to the drill site. The Director of Excavations said “What should have been part of an ordinary beach, has turned out to be an ancient shrine, exceptionally well preserved and dedicated to the gods of a more superstitious age. You can clearly see what a fantastic piece of architecture this is and how beautiful it once must have been!”

Unfortunately it’s now covered in slime and smells like a sewer. Oil spills are floating around, getting the poor seagulls all covered in oil.

We are now reaching out to YOU!
Clean the seagulls and help restore the shrine to its former glory!

Once the lot has been cleaned, the water once again is clear and blue, the plants all scrubbed from oil, and the marble shrine is restored, the TirNua archaeologists can learn how to excavate many more of these lots.

If you all help clean it up, the background will unlock in the TirNua stores and be available for purchase!
Gather all your friends and come help us clean it up! :)

Psst…
In the excavations some 0 cfp metal was found too. It cost a bit to dig it out, but it will be available in the Featured store for a few days! Hurry if you want some of that loot. :)

Fabric Bin and Gladiolus Stakes

January 24th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

We keep releasing new things throughout the week. Today we are releasing a huge Fabric bin!

As usual you can buy the fabric bin in Gold, Silver or Bronze.

The big fabric bin is great for those who have cats and recycle a lot of kitten beds, or for custom content creators.

The cc in the picture is made by Qute Pi, Madoria, Esin and Skye!

Did you know that you can make your own sewing studio and employ other people to sew your own designs for your boutique?
Everyone can sew with the professional sewing machine (in the picture) if they have a dvd. The clothes will still have the original creator’s name even if they are sewn by someone else.

If you get a big fabric bin you’ll have all the fabric concentrated in one place too.

Garden stakes for Gladiolus

These are also getting released today - organize your plants!

There’s also still an opportunity to participate in the Mini Deco Contest! The contest ends on Sunday.

Recycling = Good, Oil = Bad!

January 22nd, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

We updated again! This week we have been focusing on balancing carbon footprint and improving those simulations.

Recycling stations

We’ve improved the recycling stations a bit. Using the recycler will now help clean cfp! You’ll be seeing the green foot float up from the machine when it cleans the environment. The machine also cleans your personal cfp and the resources you are recycling.

It’s also much more clear what the machine really does. You will see floating icons for which components were created while you sorted the trash. If you see the trash just roll on by, that means the machine didn’t do anything that pass. Keep your Mental value as high as possible while sorting and it will be much more efficient!

We have also added fiber to the resources you can get. It’s no longer possible to overfill the machine and have the extra trash disappear.

Recycling is Good for you!

When you recycle an object, this also helps clean up your cfp and the cfp of the lot.
Quick, someone stop him before he recycles those plants! :)

Oil is Bad for you!

Oil derrick and donkey now add cfp and are bad for the environment, and bad for your personal cfp scores.

Energy quality

You can now easier see the quality of the energy in your batteries and depots. Look for the new display Energy per 100 charge, and it will tell you if your energy is good, bad or neutral. Dirty energy will show with a positive number and clean energy with a neutral or negative.

Changes to the basic new objects

Due to popular demand, the Basic Tophat (Blue), the Sign, and the Bronze component bins are now scannable and printable for all residents. The Silver and Gold varieties are not printable, but have had their cfp significantly lowered. Now you can be green and still have all the nice things!

Other fixes and changes

  • We changed how much cfp the resources and resource bins are when you recycle an object - you will be seeing more changes to this so bear with us while we work to balance the cfp amounts. More info about this next time when we are done changing it!
  • Fruit trees should no longer accumulate negative cfp when they are dead
  • Friends list is now the default view on the persona web

  • This Week’s Featured Player Event

If you didn’t catch the Stand up comedy player event this weekend, you missed out!

Current Contest - You can still enter!

You can still participate in the Mini Deco Contest - all participants get 10 GP!

Keep an eye out for more things happening throughout this week… We have heard rumors of some stunning archaeological finds near the coastline… What could it be? :)

What do you think about this week’s changes? Sound off in the comments!

    Re-released improved simple backgrounds

If you want a nice clutter free background for your garden, this could be for you.

You can find these in the Featured store!
These can be applied to all “grass” type terrains (Low Lands, Fertile Plains, Hillside). So if you want to be able to use one of these lots, and don’t have a lot that size yet:

  • Double-click the map where it’s green (that means a grass terrain)
  • Make sure “Selected terrain:” says Hillside, Low Lands or Fertile Plains
  • Pick the same size as the background you are getting
  • Buy the background from the Featured store
  • Change the background under Lot Information

  • Note that the backgrounds can only be applied to the size lot mentioned in their description, they don’t resize with the lot.

    Psst…

The new Undiscovered flower pictured above, was found growing out of toxic waste! Scientists argued about what to call it.
We asked our players for a name on the App page and the developers then voted on them. We landed on the name Flumbrella as suggested by Avyi! Well done and thanks for participating!

Let’s get to decorating! Good luck and have fun! :)

The Tophat Random Draw is here

January 19th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

This week we’re releasing the Tophat Random Draw!

We had a guessing game on our Facebook wall and many of you guessed what we would pull out of these hats. That’s right - the hat contains some writable cards!

It’s useful for all kinds of lotteries, board games, giveaways, game shows and other situations that call for random cards!

    There are three different hats.

The difference between them is how many cards you can add and how much text you can write.

Basic tophat random draw (Blue) - 8 cards/16 characters

Tophat random draw (Red) - 20 cards/32 characters

Deluxe tophat random draw (Green) - 40 cards/64 characters

The hats can be used for any number of things! We can’t wait to see what you do with them. :)

By setting the permissions to “Only Me” you are sure that the cards can’t be altered or deleted by anyone but yourself.
In the picture above you can see what others see, and what someone with edit permission sees.

    Known issues

Some workarounds to known issues this week:

Tip Jars: When you add tau to a tip jar, sometimes the jar doesn’t update. The tau is in the jar but it doesn’t show it. Workaround: add 1 more tau to the jar and it turns up.

Flower reproduction: When a flower is on its last life, and you reproduce it, you get 1 child flower from it. However the game says “Flower reproduction failed” and the child pot doesn’t show up. Workaround: Reload the lot and you will find the pot on the ground.

Please keep giving us your feedback, bug reports, suggestions and ideas!

    Happy Friday! :)

    Dirty, Dirty Birdies

January 15th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

The oil is spreading! There are now many more dirty birds falling on polluted lots.

Those of you who are interested in helping more birds, remember to use the Deluxe Bird Bath - this increases the chances for birds being attracted your lot. And if you still have a lot that is dirty, but you’re not that interested in birds, the Scarecrow will scare most of them away!

If you are not a wildlife enthusiast at all, make sure your lot is located in a clean area and you shouldn’t be seeing any birds at all.

To see if it’s clean, click on the Globe and then in the map cell where your lot is located. If it’s black or orange it’s polluted!

    Have fun cleaning!

    Environmental Disaster Strikes in TirNua!

January 13th, 2013 by TirNua Anna Leave a comment Share on Facebook

An environmental disaster has struck - all the lots are now showing their true colors.

You can no longer get away with being a litterbug and polluting our world - nobody wants to live downwind from your factory!

Birds should now only fall on dirty lots - but they will fall twice as fast!

If you want to keep birds off your lot, all you need to do is keep it clean.

Grow trees and plants that help clear the air, clean the birds and don’t live downwind from someone’s stinky factory. Stay off the Supergrow… You can do it!

The community pulling together to clean up

Our community has responded swiftly to the environmental disaster! Players have bird cleaning units working hard all over TirNua, trying to clean up dirty lots.

Join the cleanup teams and help the environment!

    We have Wind

Hold on to your hats! The wind has started blowing in TirNua again! :)

Here’s how our wind map looks right now.

The wind now changes every few hours. If you want to get the most out of your windmills, adjust them and try to figure out where the best winds are. If you don’t tend to your windmills they may stop, and start again when the wind better suits their settings.

    Remember how it all works?

  • Click on Lot information to see the wind speed
  • Disengage and adjust your windmill to match that speed
  • Wooden windmills can’t be adjusted so they will stop if the wind is too strong

  • Pick up your Big Fiber bin this week

Store all your fiber in this one and you’ll always know where it is - or keep the big bin in your inventory at all times, and all recycled fiber will go to it.

    Garden stakes for bushes

Some more garden stakes! This time for the bushes and hedges.

    New Featured Items Store

We changed the stores around some, and added a new Featured Items store! This is where you can find all the best new goodies that we release.

You might also notice that a few of the old stores got merged.
Let us know what you think in the comments.

    Save those birds! :)

Every resident who logs in from today and up until January 31, 2013 gets this exclusive, super rare animated TirNuan Resident Globe as a login gift! Show the world that you were here at the start of a new era in TirNua.

As if that wasn’t enough - if you are a resident you will actually receive two of each type of globe, for a grand total of four globes per resident!

No players will be left out! All our guests also get the two TirNuan Player Globes.

We know you love being able to trade rares. The globes will be made tradeable and sellable when the promotion is over, in February.

These are set to be a login gift, so you will get them by logging in during January starting when we enable it today.

New items released - garden stakes!

Keep forgetting what you planted in those seedling trays?
Check out the new garden stakes in the Gardening store! We have stakes for banana, orange, apple, corn, coffee and strawberries this week.

    New Super Storage boxes!

We have some new huge storage bins that should make your virtual lives a whole lot easier. Paper and wood boxes are now available to you!

They come in three sizes and will hold 45, 900 or 5850 units, for the Large, Super and Jumbo boxes respectively. Clean out that inventory, open up all your storage boxes, and put everything in the same place!

These are very easy to fill. You place this bin on the ground, and your resources in inventory. Click to “Fill max” or “Fill some”, and the resources are automatically put into the bin from your inventory. They can be extracted back out just as easily. No excessive clicking or carrying the resources to the boxes one by one.

Note that they work the same as other resource bins. Extracted resources will first go into another bin on the lot, and if there isn’t one on the lot, they go into your inventory.

You will find these bins for sale under Miscellaneous in the TirNua store.

    We have a winner!

Thank you for all your guesses on yesterday’s contest - and all the great ideas and suggestions too. We have a winner - Divine Mama! You were absolutely right, the new items we are releasing are storage bins. More precisely - big, massive, huge bins where you can store large amounts of resources!

We’ll be in touch to hand over the prize - one of the biggest, baddest boxes you have ever seen. :)

    Cheers!
